Why do our multi-day tours include travel insurance?

Specialized "third-party" travel insurance covers a wide variety of illness or accident-caused cancellation charges and many other risks. We have had years of personal experience with thousands of travelers who have been covered by AIG Travel Guard & Collette and feel good about how well they take care of our travelers in their times of difficulty. We particularly recommend buying insurance to cover cancellation and interruption fees. This covers accidents or sickness (yours, family member, or traveling companion) resulting in cancellation or trip interruption charges. If your roommate cancels, the roommate’s refund cannot be reduced to cover your single supplement; that’s why each roommate should have travel insurance to reimburse for this extra cost.

Note that Medicare does not cover you outside the U.S. 
Travel insurance does. Likewise, there are significant gaps and limitations with "free" credit cards, vendor-offered, and membership plans.
